DON TOBIN, DIRECTOR OF COACHING & TRAINING

Coaching

Since 1995, the Director of Coaching and Training at Dunedin Stirling Soccer Club has been Don Tobin. Don brings his life long experience as a player and coach, and his love for the game to the players and teams at Dunedin.

Don, known more commonly as "Tobin" to the countless players he has trained over years, is directly involved with the individual training and coaching of the youth players at Dunedin Stirling Soccer Club. Unlike many Directors of Coaching at other youth soccer clubs, Don actively works with all Competitive teams and players. Don has the rare ability to adapt his training style to benefit all players , regardless of skill level, age or gender.

As a coach and trainer, Don has had the opportunity to coach numerous players who have gone to play at the college, professional, and even National Team level.

Philosophy

Don Tobin - Region Cup 2004 Don believes in developing individual player skills and tactics in a proper, progressive, age appropriate manner. His training emphasis is on individual ball skills and he teaches a passing and possession style of play that prepares players to play at higher levels in the modern game of soccer.

Creating 'Complete Players' requires coaching in all aspects of the game: Technical, Tactical, Physical, and Mental, and Tobin follows this in his training sessions. CLICK HERE for more on Don's coaching Philosophy, in his own words.

Professional Career

Don's playing career began as a schoolboy in England, where he progressed through the levels from apprentice to professional player in the English Premier League. Don's professional career continued in England and Ireland, and then continued in the United States.

After moving to the US, Don played for several American Leagues, several times being named Most Valuable Player and being named to several All-Star Teams.

Don's professional coaching career began as a player/coach for the Canton Invaders and continued as Head Coach of the Memphis Rogues. Don was also Head Coach of the Tampa Bay Extreme of the W-League (Women's League).

1978 FAI League Cup

"The F.A.I. cup campaign is one which all Rovers fans remember, with some bitterness, as an opportunity lost. In the first round Rovers visited Richmond Park where John Delemere's goal was enough to secure victory. But this only tells part of the story because the main talking point after the match was the display of keeper Alan Paterson."

This was another of those occasions where Paterson produced save after breathtaking save to keep Rovers in a game they had no right to win. In the second round Rovers were on their travels again, this time to the south, to face Cork Athletic. Two goals from Don Tobin gave Rovers a 2 - 1 win and a place in the semi-final".
